When: | New Year's Eve & New Year's Day January 1, 2007. |
Who: | Runners, running clubs and people who believe in a healthy world, gathered in cities, villages and townships worldwide. |
How: | Runners will run on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day wearing white wristbands to show support for the Millennium Development Goals. The white band is the symbol of the global campaign against poverty. These runs are locally produced by runners clubs and local organizations. All runners, runners clubs, people and organizations around the world are encouraged to take initiative and participate. |
Why: |
In our world over 25,000 impoverished children die of preventable causes every day and one billion people live in conditions of extreme poverty. At a UN summit in 2000 over 189 government leaders along with leading scientists, development experts, and the United Nations agreed on the Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight time-bound targets that, if achieved by 2015, can cut extreme poverty in half across the planet. We wish to join together to show our support for the world's most effective human development strategies and putting an end to extreme global poverty. Our goal is creating a vital global community of support for ending extreme global poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. |
